INFORMING, means making the knowledge it requires accessible to the public
PREVENTING, means creating awareness about risks such as smoking, alcohol, food, occupational risks, environmental risks, prolonged exposure to the sun, etc.
SCREENING, means anticipating cancer diagnosis and informing the public, facilitating the identification of certain symptoms, and thereby improving prognosis and treatments
In 2003, as part of the French Cancer Plan, the League was represented at the highest level by Prof. Henri Pujol, then chairperson of the League, who was appointed by the Health Ministry o create, manage and develop CANCER INFO SERVICE: 0810 810 821, an information, assistance and psychological support help line, which has been co-developed with INCa (the French national cancer institute) since 2006.
True to its word, in September 2006, the National Anti-cancer League set up a Free, Anonymous and Confidential help line to assist cancer patients in obtaining loans and insurance: AIDEA (Borrowing guidance and assistance) on 0 810 111 101 (cost of a local call) from Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm.
Anti-smoking is high on the League's list of campaigns. In 2004, it organised the first Colloque Justice et tabac (Justice and Smoking Symposium) and in 2005, the second CIFCOT (International Francophone Conference on Controlling Smoking). In 2007, the League contributed largely to the introduction of the Bertrand decree banning smoking in all public places.
One of the League's priorities is to make the fight against cancer accessible to the largest number of people. Accordingly, the "Vivre" anti-cancer general interest magazine was overhauled and nationwide campaigns were launched in late 2005 and 2006 to label over 70 million fruit and vegetables: "Eat fruit and vegetables! Recommended by the Anti-cancer League".
Changing society's perception of cancer remains a permanent concern for the League which doesn't hesitate to appeal to candidates at election time, for example.
